Learning for today? We kind of like being "different" and today we were less so. Our trip to Puerto Progresso wasn't quite what we'd hoped it might be. Both of us had gotten the impression that Progresso was a quaint little place right on the beach but....as our bus rolled in we could quickly see that it did not fit the picture of quaint little place on the beach that either of us had in our mind's eye.
Our first clue should have been the fact that buses run every 10 minutes from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days/week. That is because there are so many people living in Merida and working in Progresso. Another clue might have been that people have been saying that Progresso is home to sooo many Canadian expats and a third clue might have been that cruise ships come into Progresso twice weekly during the season.
We are glad we went though and as much as it didn't fit the bill of what we look for in a quaint place on the beach to spend a few days...I can see where it would appeal to many. For my taste it is just a little too busy and there was not a hammock in sight.
The bus that runs every 10 mins to and from Progresso all day is a full sized proper highway bus (complete with aircon) and both times we were on it...it was completely full which gives you an idea of just how many people there might have been in Progresso! The round trip to and back from Progresso cost us 33 pesos each (about $3 CAD) so its a pretty affordable trip too! The trip is an hour long. Half of that time is spent on the highway between Merida and Progresso and the other half hour is spent getting through Merida to the bus station.
We decided to try something a little different today for lunch in Progresso and so decided on nachos at a restaurant that has their menu in three languages. Beside the Mexican flag they have spanish, beside the US flag they have english, and beside the Canadian flag they have french! Hmmm...there must be a lot of french speaking Canadians here (although I haven't met any) or else the Mexican's think that everyone who speaks english is from the US and all those who speak french and say they're from Canada have given Mexican's the idea that all Canadians speak french. Oh well...c'est la vie. LOL - maybe we do all speak a little french.
Once back in Merida tonight we decided on pastries and a coffee for dinner so that's what we did...hit the pastry shop, picked up a coffee and headed off to the zocalo to watch them set up for a big due tomorrow (after we're gone) where artisans from all over the Yucatan will be there selling their wares. It's maybe a good thing that we'll be gone as Lynda is trying to pack her case as I type this and I'm not exaggerating when I say that it's going to be a "challenge"! At this point she is considering what things she can leave behind and this will be the second hotel where the staff have found a "bonus" in the hotel room after we leave.
It'll be an early night tonight which is fine by me as my feet and muscles are still angry with me from all the walking we did yesterday! I'm looking forward to getting my feet up once I've attempted to "stuff" my bags too. LOL! I think that when there is so much humidity in the air that your clothes actually grow! Somehow what fit just fine when we left Canada doesn't really fit all that well anymore.
Buenos noches amigos. If we have wifi at our next stop we'll be blogging from Celestun.
